Hope Solo, the goalkeeper of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team, feels that has been unjustly suspended for six months, following her disparaging comments and misconduct in 2016 Rio Olympics.Advertisement
Even though the 2016 U.S. Olympic team managed to win the most medals this year at Rio, they also managed to create the most negative buzz surrounding their behavior during the legendary games.
After Ryan Lochte’s punishment following his “exaggeration” of certain incidents at Rio, which also led him to lose all his major sponsors, it is Hope Solo’s turn to join the club of suspended players.
Solo managed to enrage the people of Brazil from Day 1 as she posted pictures on social media which showed her covered in mosquito net and armed with mosquito repellent, reports The Wall Street Journal.
This was, of course, an effort to make a mockery of the Zika virus existing in Rio, that the media had made a huge hue and cry about, including the suggestion to shift the venue altogether in order to ensure the safety of the players before the Rio Olympics started.
Hope Solo Suspended
Needless to say, the Brazilians did not find it funny and every time Solo performed out in fields during the Olympics, the crowd booed and shouted “Zika!”
Solo took it a step further when she openly called the Swedish “cowards” for playing a defensive game, by which they managed to beat the U.S. 4-3 in the Quarter Finals, ousting them from the Olympics, reports BBC.
Sunil Gulati, the U.S. Soccer President said “Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect. We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions.”
Hope Solo has been suspended for six months and she will be eligible for selection the Women’s National team until February next year.
This is not the first time that Solo has faced suspension. She was suspended for a month back in 2015 due to misconduct.
Other than her erratic behavior, Solo has been an excellent goalkeeper. She has 150 career wins to her name, two-time winner of Golden Glove Award for the best goalkeeper at the Women’s World Cup and led her team to victory in last year’s Women’s World Cup.
Following her impeccable track record, Solo felt that it was not right for the authorities to ban her from playing. Read her reply that she Tweeted below:
