Honduras Footballer Arnold Peralta Shot Dead
Football lovers still remember Colombian international Andrés Escobar’s tragic end after the 1994 FIFA World Cup. On Thursday, Honduran footballer Arnold Peralta also suffered the same fate. He was shot dead in a car park of a shopping center in La Ceiba on the Caribbean coast.Advertisement
The motive of the attack is unclear. Honduras is recently plagued with gang violence and registers a large number of murder rates in the world. The 26-year-old midfielder Peralta featured for Scottish giants Rangers since January. He represented Olimpia, in the capital Tegucigalpa.
Soccer is the national sports in Honduras. “It is a tragic death that the national sport mourns,” said Osman Madrid, director of the Honduran football federation.
Police haven’t made arrests yet, and investigations ruled out robbery as a motive; Peralta wasn’t carrying any of his belongings. Peralta was ruled out of the Honduran side of the 2014 World Cup due to injury. He represented his country in 2012 London Olympics. He was selected in the national team that is due to play a friendly in Cuba next week.
Peralta made 24 appearances for the Glasgow-based team from 2013 to 2015. He netted one goal for the Scottish giants. Peralta’s name was trending in Twitter. Rangers’ fans remember the midfielder fondly as a committed player of their team.
