Google has started posting monthly reports on accidents by its self-driving cars in PDF format.

It was stated in its May report, “given the time we’re spending on busy streets, we’ll inevitably be involved in accidents; sometimes it’s impossible to overcome the realities of speed and distance.”

As per the report, Google vehicles have faced 12 minor accidents during more than 1.8 million miles of autonomous and manual driving since the beginning of the self-driving car project six years ago.

The report said, “not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident.”

During one of the accidents, a Google Prius “autonomous vehicle” – operating in manual mode – was rear-ended at Central Expressway.

The first report from Google lists all accidents since 2009. The future reports will contain info only on accidents during that month.
