France Confident But Cautious Ahead of Tournament Debut
France are favored to win over Gilas Pilipinas in their tournament debut and it is not a surprise. The French side will parade a star-studded roster, which includes NBA veterans Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, Joffrey Lauvergne and Nicolas Batum. Veterans Nando De Colo, Mickael Gelabale and Thomas Heurtel will also play bigger roles for France.
France are expected to top Group B of the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila. They got a huge boost two days before the start of the tournament after Batum arrived in time after taking care of his contract situation in the NBA.
With Batum flying in time for their tournament debut, Parker is confident of winning against the host country. However, the San Antonio Spurs veteran told reporters, via Philippine Star, that they have no room for complacency, saying that the host are very dangerous playing in front of their hometown fans.
Gilas Pilipinas Optimistic Heading Into 2016 FIBA OQT Manila
Meanwhile, Gilas Pilipinas are aware that they are facing tall odds in the tournament but will lean on the support from their partisan crowd. The Philippine national squad trained in Europe before the tournament, where they showed continuous improvement despite absorbing blowout defeats.
Naturalized forward and former NBA player Andray Blatche will lead their charge. International basketball veterans Jayson Castro, Ranidel De Ocampo, Gabe Norwood, Junemar Fajardo, Jeff Chan, Marc Pingris and Japeth Aguilar will try to provide the much-needed support for Blatche.
Norwood told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that they are excited to get their campaign going. But the defensive specialist admitted that they need to remain focused in order to have a chance against the European powerhouse. “It’s just a matter of mentally executing and getting on the same page,” he said.
