Gennady Golovkin was born on April 8th, 1982 to a Russian father and a Korean mother in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. He had two elder brothers who were killed while serving in the Russian army. His twin brother, Max, is a former amateur middleweight boxer and now helps out Gennady with his training.
Gennady began boxing from the age of 10 and had the privilege of holding a scholarship with the Olympic Solidarity program.
He has since won a number of world titles at junior and senior levels, reports Box Nation, including a gold medal at the World Amateur Boxing Championship in Bangkok in 2003.
In 2004, he became a recognized name in the world of middleweight boxing when he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games held at Athens.
He became pro in 2005 when he signed a contract with Universum Box-Promotion (UBP). However, after just 13 career wins, he had a controversial exit from his deal with UBP in 2010 and the Klitschko brothers K2 Promotions immediately snatched him off the market.
He is currently being trained by Abel Sanchez and has appeared in 350 amateur fights, and approximately 35 pro fights. He also holds the record for the highest kayo percentage (90.63) in the history of 160lb boxing.
When it comes to his WBA title, he has fought 14 matches so far which when combined, has lasted for a total of just 67 rounds, coming to an unbelievable average of less than 4.8 rounds a fight!

Gennady Golovkin VS Kell Brook
Gennady Golovkin faces rival Kell Brook in the ring tonight at 7, one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the year. Even though GGG is easily the favorite to win tonight, Brook is not ready to back down.
According to The Telegraph, Brook is not intimidated by the GGG, who has held the WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight titles in the past. “I feel Golovkin is on edge, he’s uncomfortable,” said a confident Brook.
Another advantage, according to International Business Times, that Kell Brook might enjoy over Gennady is the fact that the bout takes place in England, so Brook will have the crowd on his side.
But will all this be enough for brook to defeat Golovkin?
