What's This?

“Game of Thrones” Season 6 episode 3 has seen the official return of Jon Snow to the series. However the return of another Stark has been the talk of Twitter, we are talking about Rickon Stark and his direwolf Shaggydog.

According to TIME, many fans were upset that another Stark direwolf has met a gruesome end. In order to prove to Ramsay Snow that he brought the real Rickon Stark, Smalljon Umber showed him the severed head of Shaggydog, or did he?

Game of Thrones” fans are speculating that the whole Shaggydog scene is a conspiracy and that Smalljon Umber didn’t break his oath with House Stark but instead plans to kill Ramsay Snow. Although it might seem like a farfetched theory a quick look at the background of the parties involves making it sound more plausible.

First is Smalljon Umber, despite swearing allegiance to House Bolton, he did not or at least was not shown to bend the knee to Ramsay. This should have been a red flag as it is customary to kneel when swearing fealty to your lord.

Next is House Umber itself is a house known for its fierce loyalty to their liege lord. Why would a house who retained its armies after the Red Wedding suddenly decide to betray the Starks when other lesser lords would rather get flayed than recognize the Boltons as their new rulers?

Finally, there’s the political situation in the North is ripe for a conspiracy. After news that Roose Bolton is dead and that he is succeeded by a bloodthirsty Ramsay many northern lords must have seen this moment as a chance to remove the Boltons from power.

Many northerners should have known that Rickon Stark, a legitimate Stark heir is currently under the protection of House Umber. With the Ironborn gone it is likely that he is now guaranteed safety at least from the Greyjoys who were hunting him.

Smalljon himself is aware that Jon Snow is Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and above all a Stark. His honor would not cause him to betray his vows and use the wildlings for political gain as contrary to what he told Ramsay.

This conspiracy is of course just mere speculation brought forth by the fans’ love for Shaggydog. After Lady, Greywind, and Nymeria were lost it would be heartbreaking to see another Stark direwolf like Shaggydog or especially Ghost meet a gruesome fate.
