“Game of Thrones” fans quickly lost interest in what was happening in the Seven Kingdoms once Lyanna Mormont Lady of Bear Island schooled both Jon Snow and Sansa Stark. She’s a total badass after all! Why wouldn’t she be if her own family is too?
Back in season 5, the same Lady Mormont sent Stannis Baratheon a message refusing to commit House Mormont forces to his campaign. Hardly what you expect from a 10-year-old girl right?
According to Hit Fix, everyone seemed to be craving more of the sassy bear-lady after the scene from Bear Island. Fortunately, she has volunteered to lead her 62 fighting men in the battle and was seen in their camp along with the maester of House Mormont who serves as her advisor.
So what do we know about Lyanna Mormont and her family in “Game of Thrones”? Aside from her cousin Jorah and uncle Jeor, her mother Maege Mormont called the She-bear was also a proud warrior. She answered Robb Stark’s call and was there when he was proclaimed King in the North (remember that laughing lady? Yes that was her).
According to Lady Mormont, Maege was killed in the War of Five Kings which now makes her the legitimate Lady of Bear Island. Her mother retaining the name Mormont and the lack of mention of her father should tell you why this 10-year old so easily silences the older Stark siblings.
As The Telegraph reveals, it seems Bear Island doesn’t cater to the southern tradition of taking on the name of the man. The women of House Mormont are as fierce as their men and are also trained to be warriors. This was essential considering the harsh conditions of their home and the constant threat of Iron Born raiders who still believe that the island should belong to House Greyjoy.
Lyanna Mormont certainly is a breath of fresh air to those who are tired of another child rulers incompetence, cough* Tommen Baratheon cough*.
It is good to know that ‘Game of Thrones’ plans to show more of Bella Ramsey as she commands the 62 fighting men of House Mormont and not playing with Bear Island’s equivalent to Ser Pounce.
