“Game of Thrones” Episode 7 is only a few days away and fans are expecting another beloved character to return to the series. After being “dead” for the entirety of season 5, many are claiming that Sandor Clegane popularly known as ‘The Hound’ will be back, foul mouth and all.
According to TIME, not only is Joffrey’s dog returning but a fan theory suggests that he will possibly face off with his brother, the now zombified Ser Gregor Clegane also known as ‘The Mountain That Rides’ or simply ‘The Mountain’. In this ‘CleganeBowl‘, the brothers will fight as champions in an upcoming trial by combat schemed by Cersei Lannister.
After Margaery Tyrell and Tommen Baratheon announced the alliance of the Crown and the Faith, Cersei Lannister’s plan to use the Tyrell army to destroy the High Sparrow has failed. Now, like it or not her trial for her part in King Robert is underway and she will likely demand a trial by combat with Gregor Clegane as her champion.
So where does ‘The Hound‘ fit in this picture? We turn to Ian McShane for the answer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, McShane revealed in a recent interview that his role in “Game of Thrones” is going to be a warrior-turned-peace cult leader who nursed a “beloved character” back to health.
As the theory suggests, Ian McShane is talking about Septon Meribald and being a septon it can be concluded that he is aligned with the High Sparrow and Faith Militant in King’s Landing. Currently, there is no champion that could match zombie Gregor Clegane in strength, Oberyn Martell only managed ‘The Mountain” due to his use of Manticore venom.
Many believe that the Sandor Clegane is the character described by McShane. He was shown to be able to fight toe-to-toe with his brother when he protected Ser Loras Tyrell way back in season one. Meribald could possibly bring ‘The Hound’ to the capital to be the Faith’s champion against Cersei Lannister.
Episode 7 is even titled The Broken Man which further adds more the validity of the theory. Catch what happens in “Game of Thrones” this Sunday on HBO.
