Australia earned a direct to ticket to Rio de Janeiro after beating New Zealand in the FIBA Oceania Olympic qualifier. While the Boomers are not among the gold medal contenders, they are not lacking firepower.
San Antonio Spurs spitfire Patty Mills will lead their charge and is actually considered one of the MVP contenders in the tournament. Newly crowned NBA champion Matthew Dellavedova will also play along with fellow NBA players Joe Ingles and Aron Baynes.
“He just brings a different dynamic,” Dellavedova said of Bogut via FIBA. “He’s a very smart basketball player and to have that as the anchor of the defense, he protects the rim, he talks on defense.
On the other hand, Spurs superstar Tony Parker will look to lead France to a medal finish in his final Olympic stint. France failed to book a ticket to Rio in EuroBasket 2015 but was able to get a wild card berth after winning the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament last month in Manila, Philippines.
Aside from Parker, France will also parade NBA players Nicolas Batum of the Charlotte Hornets, Joffrey Lauvergne of Denver Nuggets and Boris Diaw of the Utah Jazz. Jazz center Rudy Gobert, who missed the 2016 FIBA OQT, made it in time for the 2016 Rio Summer Games.
Despite failing to qualify outright in the regional championship, Batum is confident that they have a good chance of winning a medal. He said that they are focused on their task at hand.
“We’re focused on our goal,” Batum told FIBA. “We want a medal. There are a lot of teams aiming for that so we have to really focus.”
The France vs Australia 2016 Rio Olympics basketball match will start at 1:15 p.m. ET on Saturday. Catch the Olympic Basketball action through live stream on NBC Olympics page and NBC Sports Live Extra.
