What's This?

Days after the Scuderia Ferrari team revved up their power unit for the public, the Mercedes AMG team has also fired up theirs. Just like Ferrari, the team is still keeping their new car and engine under wraps. But nonetheless, the current constructors champion showed off the new pipes of its F1 WO7 Hybrid.

One of the main differences between last year’s car and this year’s car is that Mercedes decided to fit three pipes instead of one. Formula 1 got technical illustrator to Giorgio Piola to explain why the team may have chosen to do this. According to him, the three pipes serve to “improve the noise of the engines” with the additional two exhaust pipes allotted for the turbine and wastegate.

As the top two team show off the sound of their engines, the Renault Sport team was quick to admit it doesn’t have a “cool fire-up video yet.” So instead, it decided to refer Twitter followers to a YouTube video of a kitten roaring like a lion with an MGM background.

In all seriousness, however, new Renault Sport Chief Technical Officer Bob Bell admitted he has his work cut out for him. He has the challenge of getting the team’s two sites and Viry and Enstone to work seamlessly together, so that can still enjoy economies of scale while winning races.

“It’s not an exercise in winning at all costs; it’s an exercise in winning in a controlled manner,” Bell explained.

As teams continue to prepare for the nearing 2016 season, Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo managed find time to jam onstage in London recently with rock band Parkway Drive. But don’t think Ricciardo has had a lot of free time in his hands lately. He and teammate Daniil Kvyat were recently spotted running on the treadmill alongside a pack of bulls in a new Puma ad. And as for Red Bull Racing, the team says it will unveil its RB12 on February 22 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Ferrari will reveal its 2016 car on February 19.
