Formula 1 News: Max Verstappen Tops Final Practice Day In Spain, Mercedes Taps Pascal Wehrlein To Test For Them At The Last Minute
This year’s Spanish Grand Prix winner, Max Verstappen, was more than happy to show what he can do with a Formula 1 car during the last day of testing in Barcelona on Wednesday. For the morning session, 18-year-old Verstappen went out with Red Bull’s RB12 in soft tires as well as an upgraded Renault engine. He ended up completing an impressive 118 laps while setting a fastest lap time of 1:23.267. Of the test drive, Verstappen said, “I was able to try some new things and find ways to improve my performance. I learned a lot about the RB12 today, which is very, very positive.”
Elsewhere in the grid, Stoffel Vandoorne, who was driving for McLaren, came in second. He managed to complete 108 laps and set a fastest lap time of 1:24.006 with his MP4-31 utilizing some supersoft tires. Meanwhile, McLaren’s reserve driver also spent the day trialing new parts for the car. “Of course, I had a few laps of adjusting to the car, but it definitely has progressed since I raced it in Bahrain. It’s been a positive and productive day,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pascal Wehrlein got a last-minute call from Mercedes to driver the car during the testing. Wehrlein is believed to be the replacement of Mercedes test driver Esteban Ocon since the team wanted an experienced driver to test new components in the F1 W07. Wehrlein is both a reserve driver for Mercedes as well as a driver for Manor.
On Tuesday, Wehrlein had managed to complete 86 laps for Manor. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, he managed to complete 133 laps onboard the Mercedes, setting a fastest time of 1:24.145 and placing third in the unofficial test times.
Completing the top five are Haas’ Esteban Gutierrez, who completed 105 laps and set a fastest lap time of 1:24.592, and Ferrari test driver Antonio Fuoco, who completed 118 laps and set a fastest lap time of 1:24.720.
