Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao Rematch Confirmed?

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will have to accept the fact that they will be paired to each other as long as they are still capable of fighting inside the ring. Talks about the potential rematch are making headlines again, especially now that Pacquiao has already decided to come out of retirement.

Will the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao rematch happen? For legendary boxing analyst and boxing commentator Larry Merchant, boxing fans should not rule out the second fight because of business reasons.

Merchant admitted that the first showdown between the top two fighters of their generation failed to live up to expectation. Mayweather ran away with a unanimous decision win in May 2015, but fans were left disappointed due to lack of engagement between the two superstars during the bout.

But according to Merchant, it cannot be denied that it was the biggest fight ever based on the total revenue. That reason might be enough for promoters to push for the rematch, which might not be as big as the first one but could still generate millions for businessmen.

“I believe it’s a possibility,” Merchant told BoxingScene, referring to the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao rematch. “That fight was such an amazing event and just as amazing a bust in the ring, that you know that the businesspeople will try to bring it back, because if it does a third of the business, it will still be a big event.”

Mayweather, who owns a 49-0 record with 26 knockout victories, retired after winning against Andre Berto in September 2012. The former pound-for-pound king has ruled out a return numerous times, but most analysts are still convinced that he will chase the 50th win of his career.

On the other hand, Pacquiao is officially active again and is set to face Jessie Vargas for the World Boxing Organization welterweight title on Nov. 5 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Filipino boxing icon recently said that he is open to facing Mayweather again, especially if he wins against Vargas.

“If [Mayweather] wants and the fans want to have that fight again, then why not?” Pacquiao told Omnisport via Sporting News. “That can be a very exciting fight. There’s no reason why [it cannot happen].”
