Facebook Marketplace- How To Use It? Drugs, Illegal Animals, Porn Being Sold!

Within less than 24 hours since the official launch of Facebook Marketplace, there have been reports that people have already begun buying and selling illicit goods and services. This is direct violation of Facebook’s Commerce Policy and community standards.

Facebook has recently launched “a convenient destination to discover, buy and sell items,” much like Craigslist (or even better?), and it has taken the internet by storm. The feature that has been, for now, made available only in the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, already has thousands of registered users with hundreds of new users signing up by the hour.

“I think the prevalence of Craigslist shows there’s a great need for a local commerce product,” Marketplace product manager Bowen Pan told Tech Crunch.

Illegal drugs, animals, adult services, weapons, and even body parts are being currently sold at Facebook Marketplace, according to USA Today.

According to reports from Business Insider, snakes, baby hedgehogs, fish, farm help, and people with little clothing posing obscenely (and suggestively) are some of the proscribed listings that a user can come across on the Marketplace as of today.

“Certain posts with content that violated our policies were made visible to people visiting Marketplace due to some technical issue,” Mary Ku, director of Product Management at Facebook, said in an apologetic statement.

“We are working to fix the problem and will be closely monitoring our systems to ensure we are properly identifying and removing violations before giving more people access to Marketplace.”

The Marketplace feature was in its beta phase for months until it was launched on Monday. It has replaced the Messenger shortcut from the bottom center of the Facebook app with a ‘shop’ icon.

The facility is currently available to anyone over the age of 18 in the select few countries it has been released in.

How to use Facebook Marketplace

The new Marketplace feature is easy to use, and is about as user-friendly as any other shopping app that people use on a regular basis. As per Facebook’s Newsroom, all the users need to do is to simply tap on the newly introduced ‘shop’ icon (available only in the latest version of the Facebook app) at the bottom and start exploring.

Once in, the user will have access to local listings with photos of items that have been put up for sale. Also, there are search filters that users can navigate to find something specific, or look for a particular product or service by location, category or price.

Every listing in the Marketplace includes a product description, name and profile photo of the seller, including their location. The user can send a direct message to the seller from Marketplace to inquire about the product of interest, or to make an offer.

The buyer and the seller can discuss and make the necessary arrangements after that. Facebook doesn’t involve further beyond that point as the company doesn’t facilitate transfer of money or deliver of goods in the Marketplace.
