Leicester City made one of the most unexpected title runs in the English Premier League last season when they captured the championship despite being considered among the lower-tier teams before the year started. Can they pull off another trick from their bag in the upcoming season?
Fans will immediately get a look at the defending champions in Week 1 of the 2016-17 English Premier League season. The new season is set to kick off on Saturday, featuring seven EPL Week 1 matches.
EPL Week 1 Match: Leicester City vs Hull City
The Leicester City Foxes will begin their title defense against Hull City on Saturday at KCOM Stadium in Hull. Superstars Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy will once again try to carry the team on their shoulders this season.
Being the defending champions, there is a high expectation on Leicester City and the spotlight will be on them in Day 1 of competition. However, Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri insisted that they should not be even considered favorites to win the title this year.
The veteran manager admitted that it will be close to impossible for them to repeat their successful campaign this season. He cited that teams like Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea had big moves that made them strong title contenders this year.
“It is impossible,” Ranieri said of winning back-to-back EPL titles via ESPN. “It is more difficult than last season. Of course they are stronger because they can’t make a mistake another year.”
EPL Week 1 Match: Manchester City vs Sunderland
Meanwhile, Manchester City will also begin their drive for another EPL title on Saturday. City fans are ecstatic about the new season, as their club will be handled by popular manager Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola, who moved to Etihad Stadium this summer, is looking to keep his winning streak in opening league matches alive, having won in his last six season debuts. The veteran manager gave a teaser on what to expect in their first match, saying that fans will get a good glimpse at John Stone, he told reporters via Premier League website.
