The entire United States, and probably the whole world, saw the two vice presidential wannabes during Tuesday’s for the first time in a national debate. But what caught the attention and interest of many is the rather unfamiliar debate moderator Elaine Quijano.
The Filipino-American CBS news anchor has taken over the limelight immediately after the debate between Mike Pence and Tim Kaine. While some were amazed at how she gracefully handled the debate, there were also those who weren’t quite satisfied on the way she performed.
Her stint as a vice presidential debate moderator earned her several firsts, including the first Asian-American, first Filipino-American, and CBS News anchor to every host such debate.
Quijano is seen on TV as the news anchor on CBS Weekend News. But the 42-year-old news anchor is a mainstay in CBS’ digital platform news, especially in its live stream news channel, the Washington Post reported.
According to the CNN, Quijano is also, by far, the youngest debate moderator in the past 28 years. The report added that Quijano earned the invitation to be the debate moderator for her exemplary journalistic works.
Interrupts, Cuts Topic
But many from the audience and those watching from home have expressed their frustration on how Quijano handled the debate, particularly when she cuts and interrupts while one speaker was about to say his piece.
This, did not go unnoticed among those who were in the audience who were annoyed when the moderator interrupted just when a discussion is about to heat up, the Politico reported.
“Gentleman, the people at home cannot understand either one of you when you speak over each other. I would please ask you to wait until it is that the other the finished,” Quijano scolded the candidates at one time of the debate.
