Vicente Antonio Bermudez Zacarias was shot dead in the head on Monday as he was jogging in Metepec, 30 miles west of Mexico City.
Apparently, Bermudez is the judge who had investigated some of Mexico’s biggest drug cartels, including the notorious Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
It has been alleged that the gunman, who is yet to be identified, ran behind the deceased before shooting him in the back of the head. The shot was fired at point-blank range, reported New York Post.
The lifeless body of the 37-year-old was found lying in the street before he was being rushed to a hospital that later declared him dead.
A shocking video footage showing how the judge was being shot has surfaced, and police have started their investigation based on the evidence.
“I have given instruction to the attorney general to take up this case, undertake the corresponding investigations and find those responsible for this terrible event,” said President Enrique Peña Nieto in a statement.
Supreme Court president Luis Maria Aguilar Morales to has spoken on the matter.
Appealing to the authorities to ensure the safety of judges, Aguilar said, “Federal judges are people who dedicate their lives, their personal, moral and physical integrity to serve federal justice in our country.
“They require security and peace conditions that guarantee their independence because in an atmosphere of peace and security, judges can reflect on their decisions.”
As posted by My San Antonio, a Mexican newspaper reported that the judge was not provided any protection while presiding over cases of the drug lords.
Bermudez was appointed as the district judge in December 2013. The deceased served in the Fifth Tribunal for appeals and civil judgments in the State of Mexico.
On El Chapo
Mexican drug cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman awaits extradition to the US for drug trafficking and other charges, said a senior Mexican official. The drug lord is currently under special surveillance after two previous jail-breaks. He is also restricted from getting in touch with the general population, reported VOA News.
Guzman, who has been charged with murder, money laundering and illegal drug distribution in Texas and California, is currently serving jail term in a federal prison in the northern state of Chihuahua, after his recapture in January this year.
