Controversial Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia to share the crown. He thought it would be wise for the Miss Universe 2015 organizers to make the two ladies “co-winners” instead.
Miss Universe 2015 host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced that the crown belonged to Miss Colombia. He later apologized onstage for his mistake and declared Miss Philippines as the true winner. The incident was the most embarrassing and awkward moment in the history of the pageant.
Trump weighed in. On NBC’s “Today” show on Monday, host Matt Lauer asked him what his solution would have been. “I’ll tell you what I think I’d do. I think I’d make ‘em a co-winner. Itd be very cool,” he said. “I would recommend that they go have a beautiful ceremony, which is good for the brand and good for Miss Universe, and do a co-winner.”
Trump used to co-owned the Miss Universe brand with NBCUniversal. But NBC decided to severe the ties after his controversial comments about Mexican immigrants during his presidential campaign launch.
Come September, he bought Miss Universe back, including Miss USA and Miss Teen USA from NBCUniversal. He then sold the rights to entertainment conglomerate WME/IMG. Fox got the domestic rights to air Miss Universe.
In the wake of the whole Miss Universe 2015 fiasco, Trump tweeted Sunday that it would never have happened if he was still in-charge. He re-tweeted a post from one of Miss Universe 2015 fans which states: “Where is Donald Trump when you need him?”
As previously reported by Morning News USA, there is a Snapchat going around social media that shows Harvey saying that Miss Colombia was written on the teleprompter. The reigning Miss Universe, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, meanwhile, said she tried to approach Miss Colombia but decided otherwise after realizing it was a bad timing.
