Denver Broncos Target Colin Kaepernick To Replace Brock Osweiler
Denver Broncos, the reigning Super Bowl champions, are without a quarterback. With Peyton Manning retiring and Brock Osweiler bolting to Houston Texans, Denver are targeting free agent Colin Kaepernick to take charge as the new quarterback.Advertisement
In a shocking turn of events, this is the first time in NFL history the defending Super Bowl champion are without a quarterback. When Manning retires, it is almost a given that Osweiler would succeed him at the most enviable position in football.
According to USA Today, Kaepernick and Broncos would be a perfect match. “Yes, he’s (Kaepernick) had a shaky last couple of seasons, but he’s the only one of these players that has proved he can play among the very best in the right system. He wants out of San Francisco, too, so a fresh start might provide just the jolt he needs,” writes Luke Kerr-Dineen.
Other options for Denver Broncos..
If not Kaepernick, what are the other options for Broncos? Johnny Manziel, Case Keenum, Nick Foles, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Fitzpatrick are all being considered as possible options. Of course, Manziel can be ruled out immediately because of his off-the-field issues.
Fitzpatrick is getting a lot of interest from New York Jets. Can the 33-year-old veteran be persuaded to join Broncos with the right offer? On paper, Fitzpatrick sounds like a temporary solution. However, Kaepernick has shown the ability to thrive under pressure. He was instrumental in the 49ers winning the NFC title in 2012.
According to CBS Sports, the Broncos could talk to 49ers about a possible trade for Kaepernick. The Cleveland Browns and the Jets have also been linked with Kaepernick. However, that was before Broncos lost Osweiler. Now, the dynamics has changed.
Last season, Denver Broncos got a closer look at Kaepernick when San Francisco 49ers practiced for two days at Denver’s training facility before their August 29 exhibition. At the time, Broncos GM John Elway had nothing but praise for Kaepernick’s work ethic. “I’ve always liked Colin. He’s very athletic, and he can make a lot of big plays. He’s doing more within the pocket, which I think if he continues to do that, it’ll help him,” Elway said last August.
