Delta Airlines Pilot Orders Pizza For Passengers Aboard Delayed Flight
After a flight destined for the Atlanta airport was delayed due to heavy rainfall, a Delta Airlines pilot delivered pizzas to the passengers.
On Tuesday, several flights were delayed because of heavy rainfall at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The flight from Philadelphia to Atlanta had to make an emergency landing in Knoxville, Tenessee.
According to Daily Mail, Khoury Ashooh, a passenger, said, “We circled in the air for a while (and) then the captain said we were diverting to Knoxville because of storms over the airport in Atlanta.”
The pilot ordered pizzas from Pizza Hut after being forced to stay in Knoxville for several hours. People took to social media to express their happiness.
According to CNN, Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant said, “It’s part of an effort company-wide when weather disrupts our operation to get food and beverages to delayed customers.”
The flight arrived at the Atlanta airport three hours later than scheduled, at 7 p.m. The rains had caused other flights to arrive late, including ones from Ohio, Illinois and Mississippi. The passengers aboard these flights, too, received pizza.
Overall, Delta suffered 106 cancellations and 653 flight delays, 3 percent and 21 percent of their daily flights respectively, according to an email sent by Daniel Baker, head of Flightaware.com. There were “173 cancellations across all airlines (mostly Delta and their regional partners) as well as 802 flight delays” at the Atlanta airport.
He further said, “A meal can go a long way to calming nerves, and it raises the observation that there were far fewer incidents of air rage when airlines gave out food and cocktails for free!”
In July 2014, Gerhard Bradner, a Frontier Airlines pilot, had ordered 35 pizzas for passengers aboard a flight forced to make an emergency landing in Cheyenne, Wyoming, due to heavy rainfall.
