Not many will find a reason to dispute Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo’s act of generosity and goodwill.Advertisement
Ronaldo has donated the €600,000 that he earned as his bonus after Real Madrid clinched the coveted title of Champions League to charity. This gesture of Ronaldo, who also plays forward for the Portuguese international team, came a few days after he scored the penalty that decided Real Madrid’s victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final at the San Siro in Milan on Sunday.
It is Real Madrid’s 11th Champions League title.
Although Ronaldo did receive criticism over the way he celebrated his team’s victory, a few will find a reason to criticize his considerate gesture. He was named the world’s most charitable sportsperson in 2015. Following the tragic earthquake in Nepal last year that killed as many as 8,000 people, Ronaldo donated £5 million to help the country in its aid efforts.
Prior to the start of Saturday’s Champions League final, Ronaldo spoke with his agent Jorge Mendes and asked for his bonus to be donated to a non-government organization. Throughout his career, the sports star has supported several charities like UNICEF, World Vision, and Save the Children, as reported by the Independent.
Ronaldo will be playing for the Portuguese side in the European Championships to be held in France in June, Metro.co.uk reports. His side, in the absence of Ronaldo, was defeated by England 1-0 at Wembley on Thursday. According to the Irish Independent, Ronaldo scored 51 goals in 48 games last season and also won his third European Cup medal.
