Argentina, the top-ranked team in the world, are favored to win the special tournament, which was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Copa América. However, they will have to play like a well-oiled machine, as they are facing another world powerhouse.
Argentina’s top gunner, Lionel Messi, also remains doubtful for the match due to an ailing back. According to La Albiceleste manager Gerardo Martino, Messi could miss the all-important match against Chile, depending on the decision of their medical staff before the game.
“We’re hoping Messi is available for the game,” Messi told Chilean newspaper El Mercurio via Fox Sports. “His presence will be decided last minute, because the lumbar region is very delicate.”
If Messi fails to recover fully in time for the match, Martino said Nicolas Gaitan will start for Argentina against their rivals. The 28-year-old is coming off a decent season for Benfica in Portugal, scoring 25 goals in 152 matches. Martino is expecting the former Boca Juniors prospect to step up once his number is called.
Meanwhile, Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is expecting a tough tournament opener against Argentina with or without Messi, his FC Barcelona teammate. Bravo told Yahoo Sports he is actually hoping Messi will play in order to gauge their chances in Copa América 2016.
“Whether Leo does or doesn’t play, nothing is going to change our football,” Bravo said, referring to their aggressive style of play. “Personally, I’d prefer it if he plays because he brings a lot to a game.”
Chile and Argentina are familiar with each other, having collided in big matches over the past several months. Chile defeated Argentina on penalties in the Copa América 2015 final, but the Argentines got back at their rivals with a 2-1 victory in the World Cup qualifier in March.
