Conor McGregor can’t stop talking about Floyd Mayweather Jr. While on the road promoting UFC 205, The Notorious has been name-dropping the undefeated boxing superstar left and right.
McGregor will fight in the main event of UFC 205. He will challenge Eddie Alvarez for the latter’s lightweight championship belt on November 12 in New York.
At a press conference earlier this week, the Irishman took a swipe at Alvarez and the UFC in general. He feels he is a big fish swimming in a small pond.
‘I’m looking around, I don’t know what anyone else has for me around here,” he said, as per Pundit Arena. “I might have to jump up, drag Floyd Mayweather out of bed and see what he’s at again.”
Mayweather responded by saying he tried to make the fight happen, but negotiation ultimately broke down. It should be mentioned that McGregor has a contract with the UFC. The mixed martial arts organization must be involved in any fight featuring the brash Irishman.
The potential McGregor vs Mayweather clash would have to be promoted by both Mayweather Promotions and the UFC. Pretty Boy was likely turned off by the idea of sharing profits with a rival entity.
Mayweather hasn’t closed the door on the fantasy showdown. He believes it can still happen, if the money is right.
As for McGregor, he just wants a shot at Mayweather at the soonest possible time. In an ambush interview with TMZ Sports, he said, “I told you I’m ready for that fight!”
But before that, he must first take care of business against Alvarez. During the UFC 205 press conference, the two got into a heat argument when McGregor mocked the American’s pedestrian paycheck for the fight, Fox Sports reported.
Alvarez shot back saying he didn’t need to ask for more money. He knew beating McGregor inside the Octagon would just be a formality.
UFC 205 will feature two other title bouts. Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will face Stephen Thompson while Joanna Jedrzejczyk will defend his strawweight belt against Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
