Caster Semenya has won the 10th medal for Team South Africa in the 2016 Rio Olympics by winning gold in women’s 800 metre. The athlete completed the race in 1 minute 55.28 seconds.

Though she was touted “to do something special” this year, there have been quite a controversy over her sexuality. Homophobic comments not only about her performance, but about her marriage to Violet Raseboya abound after her win.

The African National Congress Women’s League condemned the unnecessary analysis on her sexual orientation by the international media. ANCWL’s condemnation followed a debate by an international sports magazine on whether Semenya should be allowed to contest against women at the 2016 Olympics games.

“The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) condemns the unwarranted speculation by the international media on the sexual orientation of a South African gold medallist runner, Caster Semenya,” the ANCWL said in a statement released on August 13.

“As the ANCWL we view the debate on Castor’s gender as an attack to humiliate and demoralise her since she is expected to win a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic games. The ANCWL condemns the motives of those who continually perpetrate a view that an African woman has no capacity to excel in sports.”

She found support on the social media ahead of her gold-winning performance with hashtags like #HandsOffCaster and #CasterForGold. She now holds the 800 metres Olympic title along with the world Championship titles, the Eye Witness News reported.

Caster Semenya got married to long-time girlfriend and fellow runner Violet Ledile Raseboya towards the end of 2015.

“I just got married a few months ago,” Semenya told the Sunday Times earlier this year. “With the support I get from my training partners, my wife, coach, fellow South Africans and the support system at the university, there’s no way you can’t be happy.”

However, there are conflicting claims about the marriage. While some media reported that the couple got married last year, others claimed it was an engagement ceremony. There have also been reports that claimed that the couple got engaged in May 2014, Mamba Online reported.
