Boxing News 2016: Gennady Golovkin Avoiding Canelo Alvarez Fight?
Canelo Alvarez is flying high after winning the WBO light middleweight title from Liam Smith on Saturday. The Mexican’s recent accomplishment triggered some bold statements from Oscar De La Hoya.Advertisement
After the fight, the former welterweight champion turned businessman said Canelo is not afraid of middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin. On the contrary, he believes it’s Golovkin who is avoiding Canelo.
“Thirty days ago I made an offer to Triple G and his people,” De La Hoya told Boxing Scene. “I made a significant offer, an eight-figure offer. I believe it’s an offer that was two, three or even four times as much as he’s ever made. And I haven’t heard back, and that’s the bottom line.”
His revelation raised the collective eyebrows of boxing fans everywhere. It can be remembered that it was Canelo who vacated his WBC middleweight title in May to prevent a mandatory fight against Golovkin. The two camps have since agreed on a September 2017 showdown, but nothing has been carved in stone just yet.
De La Hoya claimed he has talked to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about staging the Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez fight at AT&T Stadium. He added that Golden Boy Promotions has already laid out its terms, it’s now time for the Golovkin camp to respond.
He urged the unified WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion to pick up the phone so they can further negotiate. “At least give me a call,” De La Hoya said in a press conference. “Call me back and we can talk about it. You don’t just leave anybody hanging. All they do is talk in the media and bash and this and that. Let’s talk about it.”
Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, the company that handles Golovkin, confirmed that he has engaged in negotiations with the Canelo camp. He just didn’t feel that the talks needed to be addressed immediately.
The WBA has ordered Golovkin to defend his middleweight title against Daniel Jacobs next. Loeffler wants his fighter to focus on Jacobs before stepping into the ring with Canelo, as per Boxing Scene.
Loeffler is optimistic that the September 2017 showdown between Golovkin and Canelo would push through. He said it is up to Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions to make the fight happen next year. He quipped, “My telephone is on, just like it was after the [Amir] Khan fight [in May].”
