One More Chance for the Canadians
Canada were a heavy favorite to win the 2015 FIBA Americas and were poised to earn a direct flight to Rio. The Canadians proved to be a tough nut to crack in the preliminary round but absorbed a huge one-point upset loss to Venezuela in the semifinals, ending their title aspiration.
Given a final chance to make it to this year’s biggest sporting event, Canada will once again rely on their relatively-young but talented squad. Budding superstar Andrew Wiggins did not make it to Manila this summer but there is no shortage of talents for Canada.
Tristan Thompson, who recently won an NBA title with the Cleveland Cavaliers, will be a headache down low for opposing teams with his do-it-all approach. Fellow NBA players Cory Joseph, Anthony Bennett, Tyler Ennis, Melvin Ejim and Joel Anthony are expected to have a fair share of the spotlight.
Turkey Will Look to Silence Doubters
Turkey are considered as dark horses in the tournament, but the 12 Giant Men are determined to prove they are a strong contender in the 2016 FIBA OQT Manila leg. They showed a glimpse of their strength during their twin victories over Gilas Pilipinas in their recent friendlies.
NBA veteran Omer Asik will lead Turkey in the tournament along with Semir Erden, Cedi Osman, Sinan Guler and Furkan Korkmaz, who was recently selected 26th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. Naturalized point guard Ali Muhammed is tipped to provide backcourt stability for the European powerhouse.
