Things aren’t going too well for Bud Light after controversies surrounding their new slogan #upforwhatever. It is believed that the slogan encourages people to indulge in rape.
According to Anheuser-Busch, the brewer, that was never its intention.
“The Bud Light Up for Whatever campaign, now in its second year, has inspired millions of consumers to engage with our brand in a positive and light-hearted way. In this spirit, we created more than 140 different scroll messages intended to encourage brand engagement. It’s clear that this particular message missed the mark, and we regret it. We would never condone disrespectful or irresponsible behavior. As a result, we have immediately ceased production of this message on all bottles.”
Social activists say that alcohol is one of the most used tool to take advantage of victims. Rape cases due to alcohol are quite common. Considering such scenario, the slogan can be quite damaging.
Also, the “up for whatever” campaign attracted a lot of criticism, believed to be damaging for the brand image.
