Kobe Bryant Announces Retirement, Read Kobe Bryant’s Poem

Is Kobe Bryant retiring? Bryant, arguably one of the ten greatest players in the history of the sport, announced Sunday that he will hang his sneakers at the end of the ongoing NBA season. Bryant helped the Los Angeles Lakers capture five NBA championships.

People have been watching the news for any breaking story on Kobe Bryant’s retirement. His Lakers team have been struggling this season with a 2-13 record. Is it time for the NBA All-Star to retire?

Bryant wrote a touching poem titled “Dear Basketball” to declare his intentions to the world. Here are some parts of the poem.

As a six-year-old boy
Deeply in love with you
I never saw the end of the tunnel.
I only saw myself
Running out of one.

I played through the sweat and hurt
Not because challenge called me
But because YOU called me.
I did everything for YOU
Because that’s what you do
When someone makes you feel as
Alive as you’ve made me feel.

You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.

The poem ends with:

Love you always,

“Is Kobe Bryant retiring?” By stating that “This season is all I have to give,” Bryant has perhaps answered those questions. NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, issued the following statement:

With 66 remaining in the Lakers’ schedule, the remainder of the season will likely turn into an adoration tour for Bryant. Byron Scott, the Lakers coach, said that the icon will play tonight’s game against Indiana Pacers. “I think he still loves this game. He still has a passion for it. He’s still a competitive young man,” Scott told reporters on Sunday after the news broke.
