After realizing that it was not a wise decision to launch a too high-end smartphone, the BlackBerry Android Priv, the Canadian company decided to release two other smartphones this year priced at $400 to the max. According to reports, one device will feature a physical keyboard, while the other will come with a touchscreen.
The news was confirmed by the company’s CEO John Chen who announced the release of both phones in an interview to The National. He said, “A lot of enterprise customers have said to us, ‘I want to buy your phone but $700 is a little too steep for me. I’m more interested in a $400 device.”
The BlackBerry Priv comes at a price tag of Rs. 62,999 (US$949)(read this), while the two phones slated to launch this year will be priced around $300 and $400, respectively. After receiving heavy criticism for Priv’s high price tag, the company has decided to launch two new mid-range devices, according to First Post.
Priv came far too late to the market to recuperate losses made by the smartphone manufacturer due to the long gap created since the release of its last smartphone. However, Priv’s price was far too high that turned away many customers. The recent announcement of two mid-range devices by the smartphone company is expected to help it gain its lost grounds, reports The Indian Express.
According to market analysis, BlackBerry could sell 600,000 handsets in the past three months till March end, which is much lower than 850,000 units as predicted. As for the Priv, it didn’t contribute to improve the financial status of the company, despite being the first BlackBerry Android smartphone.
Owing to several disadvantages, such as, not-so-thumb-friendly interface, average keypad and badly implemented hub, Priv was a disaster. We will have to wait and watch until the two new launches come to the market that will decide the fate of the company.
