Following the huge success of Avatar in 2009 as the top-grossing film of all time, earning $2 billion in sales, a sequel was expected. In fact, Avatar 2 is currently being polished by director James Cameron. While the script for the movie is incomplete, provided are the following spoilers Cameron, lead actress Zoe Saldana, and Sam Worthington have revealed so far.

First off, the official Avatar website declared in 2014 that the franchise will continue with three more sequels to be released in 2017, 2018, and 2019. For Avatar 2, production had started since late 2014. Currently, the script for the movie is still being written.

Cameron announced in the website, “Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens.’ We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

The director also revealed that Avatar 2, 3, and 4 would be filmed back to back. Initially, the release date for “Avatar 2” was lodged for December 2016. However, production got delayed and modified the Avatar 2 release date to December 2017. As was revealed by Cameron, “Christmas of ’17 is the target.”

He added, “At least that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.”

The director also revealed what the viewers can expect from the Alien world in the upcoming Avatar sequel. He stated, “We have designed more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. (We’ve finished) all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see.”

With respect to the script, Cameron said, “The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year [2016].”

With respect to the cast, spoilers revealed that Sam Worthington will reprise his role as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana to continue playing as Neytiri, and Col. Miles Quaritch will still be played by Steven Lang; all of the actors committed to their roles for the upcoming three installments of Avatar.

Catch Avatar 2 in theaters this December 25, 2017.
