Apple Unveils the iPhone 6
Apple has officially announced the next generation of the company’s iPhone line of smartphones, the iPhone 6.
The iPhone 6 now has a larger screen than its predecessors with a 4.7-inch screen compared to the 4-inch screen found on the iPhone 5 and 5S. The screen on the iPhone 6 is a Retina screen with an HD resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels which gives it a pixel density of around 326 pixels per inch. One feature of the new iPhone’s screen that’s sort of a disappointment is the lack of a protective sapphire layer which was rumored to be included. Instead it features an “ion strengthened” screen.
The design of the iPhone 6 leaves behind the blocky design of previous iPhones and now looks closer to the current generation iPad Air and iPad Mini with rounded edges. It also follows suit of other devices with similar screen sizes by having a side-mounted power button instead of the top-mounted one found on previous iPhones. Lastly, it measures only 6.9mm think which makes it the thinnest device the company has ever made.
On the inside, the iPhone 6 features the company’s latest 64-bit mobile SoC (system-on-a-chip), the A8. According to Apple, the A8 is 25 percent faster, 50 percent more efficient, and renders graphics 50 percent quicker. It is coupled with Apple’s M8 motion-coprocessor which gives the phone the ability to track fitness and health levels including the ability to differentiate between when a person is running or cycling along with the ability to measure elevation.
The iPhone 6 will also come with a high-capacity battery which gives it up to 14 hours of talk time, 10 hours with 3G and LTE, and 11 hours for video playbacl. The camera on the iPhone 6 is still the same 8-megapixel camera as the previous iPhones but with a new sensor as well an f/2.2 aperture lens and dual-LED flash. The camera is also able to shoot video at 1080p 30 or 60fps.
The iPhone 6 will be available in three colors – gold, silver, and space grey – and will be available on September 19 but pre-orders will begin on September 12. The iPhone 6 will cost $199 on a two-year contract for the 16GB model, while the 64GB and 128GB variants will be available for $299 and $399, respectively, under the same contract.
