According to sources who have spoken with Variety on condition of anonymity, Apple had started the initial discussions with several Hollywood producers and entertainment big wigs for its future production of original content. The sources told Variety that Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, is at the helm of the project.
Variety noted that sources are predicting Apple to produce long-form content that will pit the company against Netflix. But the plans are still in early development as it could not be confirm whether Apple will focus on producing films or TV series.
The company is also said to be considering venturing in independent films, the sources added. At this stage, Apple is skimming through contents from different film festivals that give award to independent films. The chosen movies will be distributed on iTunes in the next years to come, Variety was told. Another thing taken into consideration is whether the company will focus on episodic video content or welcome unscripted videos, the latter being similar to what YouTube is offering.
Variety noted that Apple’s plan to enter the world of original content is two-pronged. On one hand, the company will be a strong competition for those who are already in the industry for long. On the other hand, Apple could also be a new lucrative buyer for contents from different studios.
In March, Morning News USA reported that Apple is on its way to introducing its own skinny TV bundle. The company is said to be in talks with 25 TV networks that include ABC, CBS and FOX among others. In April, Morning News USA also reported that Apple and Disney had an argument as to how many Disney channels Apple will include for its reported TV bundle.
