Apple Announces Record Holiday Sales of 51 Million iPhones
Apple Inc had a successful holiday season. That is because it was able to sell 51 million units of iPhones during the quarter ending December 28. It even sold 26 million iPads in the same period. This means that the technology firm is posting record revenue in the quarter.
Sales figures in the last quarter exceeded figures in the preceding quarter. From July to September, the company posted sales of 33.8 million units of iPhones and 14.1 million units of iPads. In the October to December quarter in 2012, Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones and up to 22.9 million iPads.
Gratitude to customers
It was interesting how sales in the quarter to September were high. That was because during that period, most of the consumers were practically waiting for the anticipated release of iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Even the iPad Air and the Retina iPad mini were not yet released that time.
In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed happiness over the record sales in the period. He reiterated the strong performance of Mac products as well as the continuous growth of iTunes. He also praised the customers for being satisfied, loyal, and engaged in the new devices. Mr. Cook committed additional investments of the company to further develop and release new products in the future.
Meanwhile, Apple booked sales of 4.6 million units of Macs in the recent quarter. That rose from 4.1 million units sold last year. However, in comparison, it was a decrease from 4.8 million units sold in the preceding quarter. This news came in time with the recent commemoration for Mac’s 30th anniversary last Friday (January 24).
On the other hand, the 51 million units of iPhones that were sold in the quarter made an all-time high quarterly sales. However, this time, Cupertino opted not to break down the sales figures yet. Thus, we could not tell how many units were accounted for iPhone 5S and how many for iPhone 5C.
iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C were simultaneously launched in September, the first time for Apple to do so. Initially, it was expected that iPhone 5C would be more popular because of its lower price tag. But not surprisingly, iPhone 5S has eventually become more patronized because of its new features. The predecessor, iPhone 5 that was launched in 2012,remains popular as well.
