Danny Lotz was “God’s Gladiator,” said wife Anne, referring to the fact that for more than a decade after Danny retired from dentistry, “he fought the ravages of the disease.” Danny and Anne were married for 49 years.

Danny, once a member of 1957 Tar Heel basketball National Championship team, was found unconscious and afloat in their pool around 3:45 Monday afternoon at their house at Ponderosa Road. He was rushed to intensive care after emergency workers responded to a call.

“He’s in the water. He’s huge. I can’t get him out. I’m just trying to hold his head above water,” Anne told someone on 911. The wife posted about the incident on Facebook and urged everyone to pray for his recovery.
