The Android Nougat has made finally made an appearance but not in places you would expect. No it’s not the latest flagship models from Samsung, LG, HTC or even Google, no it comes to the four-year old Google Nexus 4.

It’s all thanks to the Android hacking community who have certainly outdone this time. They have successfully ported the newest incarnation of the OS to the somewhat antiquated Nexus 4.

“You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, you didn’t stop to think if you should.”

Apparently the guys at XDA-Developers did not follow the immortal words of Dr. Ian Malcolm. It seems they have found a way to furnish the device with the Android Nougat.

There’s no doubt that the Nexus 4’s Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM and 2100 mAh battery is far from flagship material. While it definitely THE ONE during its time, that time has since passed.

While it has proven that Google’s handsets are timeless, the successful port is not without issues. Like its successor the Google Nexus 5, the Google Nexus 4 has some troubles handling the OS.

According to Phone Arena, the build can only be described as rocky. Users have experienced frequent crashes and functions like NFC, accelerometer and GPS are not working.

Not everything about the port is a wreck however. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and hardware acceleration are among the functions that are apparently still working.

Still the port is still very much a work in progress. We’re not telling you to buy a used Nexus 4 to enjoy the latest Android OS.

However, if it does happen you have the device lying around the house, installing the Android Nougat is a great opportunity to breath life into that old dinosaur.
