Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 users eagerly await Google’s latest mobile operating system. Only one of those devices is eligible for the sugary update.
According to Neuro Gadget, the Nexus 5 was not included in Google’s update list. The 2013 smartphone can still boot Android 7.0 Nougat via a custom ROM.
Interested takers are advised to back up their data before downloading and installing custom ROMs. It’s worth mentioning that using custom ROMs may nullify the smartphone’s warranty.
As for the Nexus 6, users have reported getting the Android 7.0 Nougat update as early as October 4. The two-month delay is said to be caused by battery issues on the Nexus 6.
The Android 7.0 Nougat update for Nexus 6 has build number NBD90Z. Users need to clear 860 MB of hard disk space to download and install the latest Android firmware.
A bit of patience is required. Wider availability for the OTA update won’t come until later this month. Nexus 6 users who are anxious to boot Android 7.0 Nougat can do so through Google’s official factory images.
Android 7.0 Nougat contains a host of visual and performance enhancements. Users can now quickly switch between apps by simply double tapping on an app’s overview button. Doing so will switch the two most recently used apps, Android Authority pointed out.
There is a new split-screen mode which can be enabled in portrait or landscape view. App developers have the freedom to adjust the two window sizes for their apps. Android 7.0 Nougat also supports the Vulkan 3D rendering API. This means games perform at a higher graphics capacity and users have greater GPU control.
