After the shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge yesterday, which sparked an outcry, a new video of the incident with a closer angle has surfaced.

“Hey bro! You f*ck with me, I swear to God!” These are the words that can be clearly heard from the video. It was said by one of the officers moments before Sterling was shot several times. There is a huge stain of blood covering his chest. He would later be pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, officers were called to respond to a disturbance call 2112 North Foster Dr, Triple S Food Mart at about 12:35 in the morning. The caller had said that a black male wearing a red shirt and selling music CD’s had threatened him with a gun.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers made contact with 37-year-old Sterling at 6061 Plank Road. Police said that an “altercation” between Sterling and the officers took place.

“Sterling was shot during the altercation and died at the scene,” said the police department.

From the video, it is unclear as to which of the two officers actually shot Sterling. In the Twitterverse, one user remarked, “Why is everyone turning a blind eye to him trying to pull a gun on those officers? You can see them take it out of his pocket.”

Meanwhile another user asked, “Would you be ok with this if the vicim was not black? Just curious…”

Following the shooting of Sterling, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards issued a statement saying, “Based on the information I have obtained from law enforcement and the footage I’ve seen from one publicly available video – that from the handheld cell phone, I have to tell you that I have very serious concerns. This video is disturbing.”

Moreover, Edwards said that Sterling’s case has already been turned over the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI. Meanwhile, the Louisiana State Police is expected to give assistance “when asked.”

Edwards is now appealing to the community to remain peaceful amidst protests that have been organized following Sterling’s death

“Another violent act or another family torn apart is not the answer,” he said.
