It would have been a great day for 23-year-old mother Africa Bass. It was her son’s birthday. But before she could do any celebrating, Bass was gunned down by an SUV who sped past her South Shore neighborhood in Chicago.
According to Bass’ sister Vonna Romiti, her son still does not know what happened to his mother during his fifth birthday.
“We don’t know how to explain this tragedy to him,” Romiti explained. At the same time, Bass leaves behind a two-year-old daughter “who also doesn’t understand that she will not see her mother again.”
The incident occurred on 87th Street. Romiti said that Bass was in the middle of a house move as her previous house was set on fire a few days ago.
According to a report from ABC 7, Bass was walking outside at around 12:05 a.m. on Wednesday when someone in a black SUV shot her in the back. The young mother had been walking with her Aunt, Sade Wilson, through the Germano Millgate Apartments. Wilson said that Bass also took a shot in the chest.
Romiti said her sister was killed within 30 minutes of moving in to her new home.
Following the shooting, Bass was taken to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Here, the young mother of two was pronounced dead.
“Who would do this to my baby? When is it going to stop? When is it going to stop? Y’all done killed something very special to me. Very special,” said Bass’ mother Sheila Jones.
Romiti said their entire family is still shocked by the killing. She has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Bass’ funeral cost and expenses. “Anything donated will be appreciated,” she said.
