A 4-year-old Detroit boy was mauled to death by a pack of pit bulls in an incident where they pulled him from his mother, dragged him away and attacked him.
The child was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the hospital. Three of the four pit bulls were shot by the police; the fourth one is in custody, according to Sgt. Cassandra Lewis.
The dogs appeared in a gap at the bottom of the fence and attacked the boy who was walking with his mother. “The mother tried to fight the dogs off,” Police Chief James Craig said. “What’s telling in this scenario (is) the viciousness of these animals, the fact that they removed this child from the mother’s grasp.”
Yolanda Samuels, a neighbor who was at the scene, called 911 after she heard the mother crying, as reported by CBS News. “One of (the dogs) grabbed the baby from her and drug the baby under the fence,” Samuels said. “The dogs started mauling on the baby, and when we came out — we were getting ready to go somewhere — she said, ‘Miss Lala, they’ve got my baby!'”
The attack didn’t stop even when a neighbor threw a brick and tried to pepper-spray the dogs.
The names of the victim and the dogs’ owner have not been disclosed. However, police say that the owner is cooperating. “It’s pretty much an open-and-shut case,” Lewis said, as reported by ABC News. “We know who the dogs belong to.”
